Impacts to our living streams
Ecosystem in action
This is a conceptual diagram showing the flow of freshwater from the Tuggerah Lakes catchment, including the upper catchment (non-local), rivers and the fringing catchment (local), to the lakes. Freshwater flows from the upper catchment deliver sediment, nutrients and pollutants to the lakes via Wyong River and Ourimbah Creek.
Locally, stormwater runoff and smaller creeks deliver sediment, nutrients and pollutants from the fringing catchment to the near-shore zone of the lakes where it gets trapped causing poor water quality. Most of the sediment, nutrients and pollutants remain in the lakes due to the limited exchange (~1%) of lake water with oceanic water at The Entrance.
Other impacts include:
- Loss of surrounding wetland to industrial, recreational and housing development
- Destruction of lake-side vegetation due to urban development
- Dredging and reclamation works along the lakes’ shorelines
